“kick start” band for beginners, Session 1 - “Kick Start” provides an opportunity for students grades 6-8 who were either missed in the process of starting an instrument in their school band program or have decided to change instruments. A comprehensive review throughout the week will allow each beginner to make as much progress as possible.
The Middle school Band program is a one-week band program held during the Session 1 for students who have studied their instrument for only one or two years. This program is designed to give students a full band experience, and also learn music theory, attend master classes, participate in jazz band and study privately with an artist-teacher. This session is open to students completing grades 5-7 with only one or two years of playing experience.
Junior High and High School International Youth Band (IYB) is held during Sessions 2, 3, 4, 6 & 7. In addition to full band rehearsals, students have the opportunity to participate in a chamber ensemble and jazz band, sectionals, master classes, music theory and reading band daily. All students have the option to study privately with a member of the artist-teaching staff. The Junior High sessions are open to students completing grades 6-8 who have played two or more years. The High School IYB sessions are open to students completing grades 9-12. Students may be selected to participate in the International Wind Ensemble (IWE), designed to challenge the advanced player. (Advanced students are also encouraged to consider a two-week program.)
total percussion - Yamaha Corporation of America and Eckroth Music will sponsor two “Sounds of Summer ’08” Percussion Camps. The camps will feature one of Yamaha’s marching percussion experts as well as the IMC percussion staff. In addition to theory classes and optional private lessons, participants will rehearse and perform “total percussion” exercises, percussion ensembles, and cadences contained in the Yamaha Sounds of Summer Curriculum. Although this program is of great benefit to the marching percussionist, the concert band percussionist will benefit from skills learned on snare and bass drum, as well as mallets. Two identical programs are offered during the Second and Third Sessions. The Total Percussion program is open to students completing grades 7-12. NOTE: Unless a student has registered for “Total Percussion Only,” the first 20 percussionists to register will also be placed in one of the concert bands. All other percussionists beyond the first 20 to register will be placed in “Total Percussion Only.”
jazz band - A full week of jazz studies, from performing with a “big band” to studying jazz theory and improvisation, performing in combos, attending jazz master classes and having the option to study privately with one of IMC’s artist-teachers. Students performing in a combo will participate in a Friday afternoon demonstration/exhibition. Guitar and bass students must bring their own amps. Drummers must bring their own sets. This program is open to students completing grades 7-12 with at least three years of playing experience. Optional private lessons from the “pros” are highly encouraged! “Kick-Start” for Jazz Rhythm Section Beginners - Get the fundamentals straight from the “pros.” This program is for students who have at least completed grade 7 and have at least one year of experience on guitar, bass, or drums. Piano players must have at least four years of piano background. All students should have a solid background on their instrument. The “Kick-Start” program will introduce students to jazz theory and improvisation at the very beginning level and will help the student develop the basic fundamentals and skills for performance in a jazz band rhythm section. All “Kick-Start” students will be required to take private lessons.
Garage band - This exciting program will be offered during Sessions 3 & 4 and will take rock ‘n’ roll musicians to new levels of performance! Students will spend the week studying instrumental technique from our staff of artist-teachers, exploring how to make the best use of electronic technology in a musical group, marketing and promoting a garage band, learning music theory and ear-training, practicing small-group rehearsal and performance techniques in various rock styles, and writing and producing your own songs. A performance will take place at the end of each week.
It is recommended that you have some experience on your instrument. Students are expected to bring their own instruments and amps. This class is open to students who have completed grade 8 through adult.
World Drumming…for Anyone! - Come and immerse yourself in Groove during this exciting new session! Participants in this one-week session will discover drumming styles, instruments, body rhythms, and culture from the Caribbean, Africa, South America, and Mexico. Students will have the opportunity to play and sing, listen and dance as our professional artist-teachers take you on a virtual “world tour”! The week will conclude with an exhibition concert. World Drumming is open to students who have completed grade 7 through adult. Non-percussionists are welcome, and some previous music experience is preferred.
The marimba/vibes camp is for the percussionist interested in mallet experience. Students will participate in percussion and mallet ensembles, theory, master classes, solo literature, as well as rehearse and perform with a full symphony orchestra. Private lessons are optional but encouraged. This camp is open to high school students, college students and adults. Some marimba background is helpful, however, you need not be an advanced player to enroll.
Orchestra - The International Music Camp offers four levels of classes for all ages of string students: a “Kick-Start” Orchestra will be added for students grades 4-8 who either missed the process of starting a string instrument or have decided to change string instruments, Cadet String Orchestra for young players, full Concert Orchestra for intermediate string students and Symphony Orchestra for advanced students. Advanced string players may also audition for the Chamber Orchestra. The session includes two large-group rehearsals daily, sectionals, theory classes, master classes, chamber ensemble opportunities, and optional private lessons. String players in grades 4 through adult may participate. Wind players must submit an audition recording demonstrating performance ability for acceptance to the orchestra camp. Only very advanced wind players will be accepted.
The FIDDLE SCHOOL will provide instruction for intermediate and advanced players with a focus on various fiddling styles. Master classes will expose the fiddle student to fiddle techniques and new tunes. Fundamentals classes will help improve reading skills while developing a greater understanding of rhythm and listening techniques. Students participating in the orchestra program may also participate in some Fiddle School classes.
choral programs - The INTERNATIONAL MUSIC CAMP offers three sessions of vocal opportunities.
The middle school choir program is offered during Session 1 for students completing grades 5-8 with unchanged voices. The program includes full choral rehearsals, sectionals, recorder classes, music theory, solfége classes and the option for private voice instruction.
The choir program during Session 5 includes a Treble Chorus, a Men’s Chorus and a Mixed Chorus. In addition to daily rehearsals with an internationally noted guest conductor, students will participate in sectionals, theory, vocal technique classes, vocal ensembles and optional private lessons. Students may also be selected to participate in a Chamber Choir. Students attending this session have the opportunity to participate in one of four Show Choirs. The Show Choir groups rehearse daily, learning pop songs and choreography.
vocal jazz is held during Session 6 in conjunction with the instrumental jazz program. In addition to participating in jazz choir, students will learn vocal jazz theory and improvisation, scat singing, vocal jazz styling’s, solo singing techniques and more! This program is open to students completing grades 8-12 with a strong vocal background.
The guitar workshop takes place during Session 5. Different levels of instruction in a variety of styles including folk, classical, jazz and rock are offered. The workshop covers chording technique, fingering technique, as well as solo and ensemble experiences. Students may use either acoustic guitars or electric guitars (you will need to bring your own amp.) Although the workshop covers beginning techniques, it is recommended that you have some guitar experience. Classes are open to students completing grades 6 through adult.
keyboard classes at IMC include both Piano and Organ study.
The Piano program includes daily classes in piano technique, piano literature, keyboard harmony, ensemble performance, music theory and master classes. Lecture classes are also available in jazz piano and organ. Classes are divided into elementary, intermediate, and advanced sections. Fees include one set of two half-hour private piano lessons. Students are encouraged to register for two or three additional lessons. At least two years of piano is required to participate in the program.
The organ program will focus on organ techniques as well as organ master classes, private instruction and small group sessions. Students will also study theory, keyboard harmony and technique. Students must have at least five years of piano in order to enroll in the Organ session. Private practice time is available for all keyboard students. The Organ program is sponsored by Rodgers Organ. creative writing offers students the opportunity to refine their skills in thinking, composing and writing in an environment that is conducive to positive reinforcement. The program will also include storytelling, novel, poem and essay writing. Individuals are also encouraged to work in their own area of interest with feedback from the course instructor. For students completing grades 7-12, college and adults.
handbell workshop participants may enroll in one of three areas of instruction during the Fifth Session. Classes for student ringers are designed for students in the intermediate to advanced levels of handbell ringing. Adult ringer levels are for persons from beginning through advanced levels. Both groups’ instruction covers a review of ringing techniques, sight-reading skills, care and repair of handbells, repertoire reading, solo and ensemble ringing, mass ringing, processions and performance in handbell choirs. The course for Handbell Directors also includes conducting techniques, an ear-training course, repertoire sessions, care and repair of handbells, and rehearsal techniques to achieve musical excellence. The workshop includes seminars on the use of handbells in worship, in classrooms, with senior citizens, etc.
Digital Photography - This session will take students from basic digital technique to creating artistic images you’ll be proud to display and share. Students will spend the week studying basic to advanced techniques of photography and how to capture images with digital cameras, exploring how to make the best use of technology and photographic software, strategies for printing and exhibiting. (There will be an additional supply fee.)
It is recommended that you have some experience with a digital camera and/or computer, if possible. Students are expected to bring their own cameras. This class is open to students who have completed grade 7 through adult. Students will exhibit their works at the end of the week.
The Art School offers a number of visual arts classes for students of all ages.
BASIC ART - This class offers students a chance to learn and improve on basic techniques, learn about new materials, as well as the opportunity to express themselves and insert their own creativity into their projects. Students will be using charcoal, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, wood, polymer clay, and more to create their art. Traditional and contemporary approaches to art-making will be offered. For students ages 11-14. (There will be an additional supply fee.)
DRAWING - (Black & White Media) Includes the fundamentals of drawing: line, shape, value, texture and composition. Students will work with pencil, ink and charcoal on life drawing (still life, nature and people.) The class will also include group work, a design project, and chalk art. This class is for students ages 14 to adult.
WATERCOLORS - Basic through advanced techniques involving the watercolor medium will be introduced. Color mixing and the incorporation of other media will be included. Classroom studies, as well as on-site painting will be explored. For students ages 15 to adult with previous painting experience.
ACRYLICS - Basic through advanced techniques using acrylics will be covered. This class will benefit both beginner and advanced students. Although freedom to create will be encouraged, the class will also include: pictorial composition, still life and landscape painting, as well as ideas for the development of style and self-expression. For students ages 14 to adult with previous drawing experience.
CARTOONING I - This class will focus on the art of the comic strip design. Students will learn the basics of developing, drawing and writing their own cast of comic characters. Line drawing and color theory will be emphasized. This class is for students ages 13 to adult with basic drawing experience.
CARTOONING II - This class will deal with further exploration of cartoon drawing and techniques. Students are encouraged to have their characters developed prior to class. This class is for students and adults who have completed the Cartooning I class. The Cartooning II class deals with ongoing skills and encourages student participation for more than one season.
PORTRAITURE - This class will include an introduction to portraiture and figure drawing using perceptual techniques. A variety of black and white media will be used to develop the use of line, space, value, texture and composition. Advanced students will work with perceptual techniques in an exploration of color. This class is for advanced students and adults.
SURVEY IN VISUAL ARTS - Participants in this class will be exploring different techniques in the area of watercolors, acrylics, drawing and portraiture. These foundation disciplines are designed to inspire, strengthen and further the visual arts in the classroom. This class is for art teachers with at least a Bachelor’s degree. Graduate credit is available through the University of North Dakota.
drama/improv - provides daily group instruction in improvisation, text development, projection, movement, staging, and acting techniques. In addition, our professional staff works with students in a small group setting to develop each person’s skills through positive reinforcement. A public performance will be presented at the end of the week. This popular class offering is limited to 80 students and will fill before the May 15 deadline. Register early! For students completing grades 7-12.
Middle School Musical - This is a brand new musical theatre experience geared towards students who have completed grades 5 through 8. Participants will learn techniques of acting, singing, and dancing, and will prepare a production of show scenes to present at the end of the week. All students will have the opportunity to explore the many aspects of a musical production, from “behind the scenes” to “front and center”.
Musical Theatre - Have you ever dreamed of being a part of a Broadway musical? Well, your chance to shine will occur during our new Musical Theatre session. Students who have completed grades 7-12 and have had some theatre experience are eligible. Throughout the week, students will share the various aspects of presenting a successful show: tech crew and set construction, as well as serving as chorus members, dancers, and in lead roles. Our faculty of professional artists will focus on all the essential elements of a successful musical show, and participants will have a well-rounded experience. Join us for a thrilling week on stage at IMC!
dance - The INTERNATIONAL MUSIC CAMP School of Dance offers training in ballet, jazz and modern dance for novice, intermediate and advanced levels. For novice dancers, a minimum of two years dance experience is required. In addition, pointe work for advanced students is offered. This in-depth program offers students an opportunity to study with professional instructors for either a one-week session or a two-week session. Students may attend either a one-week session offered during the Fifth and Sixth sessions or take advantage of the special two-week program. For students ages 12 through adult with some ballet experience.
cheerleading - The Universal Cheerleader Association will sponsor a high-energy four-day workshop June 15-18, filled with action packed cheerleading information presented by North America’s top cheerleading staff! The workshop will cover new cheers, chants and sidelines, pyramids with exciting stunts and transitions. Safety techniques are stressed throughout the program. For students in grades 7-12 and advisors.
color Guard - Check out this new program if you’re interested in the color guard movement—field marching, parade marching, or winter guard teams. This three-day program will cover color guard basics: warm-ups and conditioning, equipment handling, body movement, and performance elements. Students will gain experience with equipment such as flags, rifles, and sabers, and will learn how dance moves and rhythmic gymnastics contribute to the projection of style for any color guard activity. Open to students who have completed grade 7 or older.
Adult community band, brass band, choir, women’s and Men’s barbershop, and string orchestra - This four-day workshop (July 26-29, 2008) is for adults interested in participating in one or more of the performing ensembles. Large ensembles, chamber music, and 1-2 optional private lessons are available. The Brass Band camp is the official summer camp for the North American Brass Band Association, Inc. Participants must be 21 years or older. Write for a special brochure.
University Preparatory Programs - These programs are for high school students completing grades 10-12 interested in preparing for a career in music. The program is available for instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists.
The three-week University Preparatory Program is an in-depth program allowing students the opportunity to explore basic courses required of music majors at the university level. The program includes daily classes in music theory, ear-training and sight-singing, music history and appreciation, composition and applied music. The applied area will include two half-hour private lessons and chamber music each week and may include participation in advanced choral, band or orchestra ensembles.
Special Note: Students are encouraged to attend all three sessions (A, B, C) in one season. However, if it is not possible to attend the three-week program, students have the opportunity to take the first two weeks (A & B) together and may take the third week (C) later in the summer or the following year.

Recommendations: A letter of recommendation from the school principal or superintendent must confirm the applicant’s high standard of integrity, behavior and social maturity. A letter of recommendation from the school music instructor indicating the applicant’s academic and musical ability must also be submitted with the application for admission.
